Does blood pressure medication treat hypertension?

Hypertension often causes no noticeable symptoms, but sustained pressure can damage blood vessels over time. Different medicines work in different ways: some relax vessel walls, some help the body remove extra salt and fluid, and others change signals that regulate heart rate or vessel tightening. One medicine may be enough, or a clinician may use more than one to reach a suitable reading.

Take each dose at the prescribed time and continue it even when you feel well. Check readings as advised, keep appointments, and mention dizziness, ankle swelling, cough, unusual tiredness, or changes in urination. Limiting excess salt, staying active when safe, avoiding tobacco, and moderating alcohol can support the treatment plan.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, or sudden vision changes. A markedly high reading with severe symptoms needs immediate assessment. Do not take extra tablets unless your clinician has given you a clear plan for that situation.

Ask what reading you are aiming for, when to measure at home, and how long the medicine may take to show its full effect. Discuss missed doses, side effects, interactions with pain medicines, and when the prescription should be reviewed.
