Does blood pressure medication treat angina?

Angina is chest discomfort caused when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen during demand. Certain blood pressure medicines slow the heart, relax blood vessels, or reduce the force of contraction, which can lower demand and help prevent episodes. They are not interchangeable: the suitable choice depends on other conditions, heart rhythm, kidney function, and current medicines.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed and keep a record of chest discomfort, activity, duration, and associated symptoms. Do not stop it suddenly or substitute another tablet. Your clinician may combine long-term prevention with a separate medicine for an episode and may assess whether additional heart tests are needed.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, worsening, occurs at rest, or does not settle with the action given in your angina plan. Breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder are also emergency warnings. Do not drive yourself.
