Does biopsy treat oral submucous fibrosis?

The procedure can help confirm the diagnosis or investigate a mouth area that looks or feels different. Removing a small sample does not reverse the widespread scarring and stiffness caused by the condition. Management is planned separately and focuses on avoiding harmful exposures, easing symptoms, maintaining mouth function and addressing any concerning tissue change.

Oral submucous fibrosis causes firm, less flexible tissue inside the mouth and may restrict opening. A clinician first inspects and feels the mouth, then chooses a biopsy site if tissue needs closer examination. Local anaesthetic is commonly used before a small piece is removed. The laboratory can describe fibrosis and check for abnormal cell changes, particularly when there is an ulcer, patch, lump or another area that differs from the surrounding lining.

Stop chewing areca nut or betel quid and avoid tobacco, because continued exposure can further irritate oral tissue. Keep scheduled mouth examinations even if discomfort settles. Depending on stiffness and symptoms, care may include mouth-opening exercises guided by a clinician, nutritional assessment, medicines for symptom control or a procedure for severe restriction. After sampling, follow instructions for eating, mouth cleaning and pain relief, and attend the results appointment.

Arrange prompt review for an ulcer that does not heal, a new lump, unexplained bleeding, a persistent red or white patch, increasing pain, worsening mouth opening, trouble swallowing or a neck swelling. After biopsy, seek urgent care for bleeding that continues despite firm pressure, rapidly increasing swelling, breathing difficulty or difficulty swallowing saliva. Fever, worsening tenderness, pus or spreading redness around the biopsy area should be reported to the treating team.

Consider asking which area will be sampled, what the laboratory is checking, how to protect the wound while it heals and when the result will be available.
