Does biologic therapy treat nail psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis can cause pitting, crumbling, thickening, separation from the nail bed, or colour change. A biologic targets immune pathways involved in psoriasis throughout the body, so it may help nail disease as well as skin or joint symptoms when those are present. Damaged nail cannot instantly become normal: improvement is seen as healthier nail grows forward, while existing damage has to grow out.

The choice depends on the number of affected nails, discomfort, functional problems, skin or joint psoriasis, and previous treatment. A clinician may consider local treatment or other options when nail disease is limited.

Keep nails trimmed without cutting the cuticles, avoid picking under the nail, and use gloves for prolonged wet work or irritants. Tell the clinician about tenderness, discharge, or a nail lifting quickly, since infection or another nail disorder can look similar. Take biologic treatment exactly as prescribed and keep follow-up appointments so response and safety can be reviewed.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for new nail separation, persistent pain, marked thickening, or changes affecting daily tasks. Seek prompt advice for pus, increasing warmth, swelling, fever, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty after treatment.

Ask whether the nail changes are psoriasis or infection, how long healthy growth may take to show, and whether joint symptoms alter the treatment choice.
