Does benign prostatic hyperplasia cause blood in urine?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. As the prostate grows, it can narrow the urine channel and make the bladder work harder. Symptoms may include a weak stream, difficulty starting, dribbling, needing to urinate often, or waking at night. The enlarged tissue can also have fragile blood vessels that bleed into urine. Urinary infection, stones, medicines, kidney conditions, and other prostate problems can cause blood too.

Arrange a medical review for blood in urine, even if it appears only once or there is no pain. Tell the clinician whether the urine looked pink, red, or brown, whether clots were present, and whether you have burning, fever, back pain, or difficulty passing urine. Bring a list of medicines, especially those that affect clotting. Testing may include a urine sample and an examination to find the source.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, are passing clots, have heavy or persistent bleeding, feel faint, or have severe side or back pain with fever. These signs can indicate blockage, infection, or significant bleeding and should not be attributed to BPH without assessment.

Ask what may be causing the bleeding, which urine or blood tests are needed, whether your prostate symptoms suggest obstruction, and which changes require urgent review.
