Does basal cell carcinoma cause skin lumps?

A basal cell carcinoma can form a firm, shiny, pearly, or flesh-coloured bump. Some lumps show fine surface blood vessels, a central crust, or a small area that repeatedly bleeds and heals. They are often found on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, and scalp, but can occur elsewhere. Cysts, blocked follicles, scars, and other benign growths may also cause skin lumps, so texture and history need professional assessment.

Arrange a skin examination for a new lump, a lump that changes, or one that remains despite simple care. Do not squeeze, cut, freeze, or burn it at home. Record when you first noticed it and whether it grows, crusts, bleeds, itches, or becomes sore. A clinician may use magnification and may suggest a biopsy when the diagnosis cannot be made by inspection.

Seek prompt review if the lump enlarges, becomes ulcerated, bleeds with minor contact, or sits near the eye, nose, ear, or lip. Get urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading warmth and redness, fever, or severe pain, which can signal a complication requiring immediate care.
