Does Bacterial Vaginosis Cause Vaginal Odour?

When the usual vaginal bacteria become unbalanced, bacterial vaginosis can produce a stronger fish-like odour. It may be more noticeable after sex or around a period. Discharge may also become thinner and white or grey, but some people notice smell without much change in discharge.

A new smell can also relate to a sexually transmitted infection, a retained tampon or other object, blood, sweat, or irritation. A clinician uses the full pattern of symptoms and an examination to separate these possibilities.

Arrange a check if the odour is new, persistent, or troubling, especially when it comes with discharge, itching, pain, sores, or urinary burning. Avoid douching, deodorant sprays, and perfumed washes; these can irritate the vulva and make the bacterial balance less stable. Clean the outside gently and change out of damp clothing.

If bacterial vaginosis is diagnosed, follow the prescribed course and ask when to return if the smell does not improve. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics or an old prescription.

Seek prompt medical care for vaginal odour with fever, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, unexpected bleeding, severe tenderness, or a possible retained tampon. If you are pregnant, report a new unusual odour to your maternity clinician.
