Does Bacterial Vaginosis Cause Vaginal Discharge?

Bacterial vaginosis develops when the usual balance of vaginal bacteria changes. The discharge may become thinner and more noticeable, with a white or grey appearance. A fish-like smell can be stronger after sex or during a period. Some people have few symptoms, while others notice discharge as their main change.

Discharge can also occur with thrush, sexually transmitted infections, irritation, hormonal changes, or a retained object. Colour, smell, texture, pain, and the timing of symptoms help a clinician decide which checks are appropriate.

Arrange an assessment if the discharge is new, persistent, or different from your usual pattern. A clinician may ask about sexual health, examine the vagina and cervix, and take a swab. Avoid douching and scented washes because they can irritate tissue and disturb the bacterial balance. Wash the external area gently and use breathable underwear.

Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed and avoid sharing leftover antibiotics. If an infection is suspected, ask when sex is safe and whether a partner needs testing or treatment.

Seek prompt care for discharge with pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, sores, bleeding after sex, or burning when urinating. If you are pregnant and notice new discharge, contact your maternity team or clinician for advice.
