Does autologous stem cell transplant treat Hodgkin lymphoma?

It is an intensive treatment rather than an operation. Whether it is suitable depends on how the lymphoma has responded, your general health, organ function, and whether enough healthy stem cells can be collected.

Your own blood-forming stem cells are collected and stored. High-dose chemotherapy is then given to target lymphoma cells. The stored cells are returned through a vein so the bone marrow can rebuild blood cells after treatment.

The transplant itself does not attack the lymphoma; it supports recovery after the high-dose chemotherapy. Treatment includes collection, conditioning chemotherapy, cell infusion, and close monitoring while blood counts recover.

Your lymphoma and transplant teams may review scan results, previous treatments, blood tests, heart and lung function, current medicines, infections, and practical support at home. Tell them about supplements, dental problems, vaccination history, fertility concerns, and any difficulty arranging a caregiver or transport.

Follow the centre's instructions on food safety, infection precautions, medicines, and line care. Do not stop prescribed treatment or begin supplements without checking for interactions.

During preparation and recovery, contact the transplant team promptly for fever, chills, breathing difficulty, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhoea, new bleeding, severe mouth pain, confusion, or redness, pain, or discharge around a central line. Follow the team's emergency instructions because infection can worsen quickly when blood counts are low.

Ask why transplant is being considered now, what response is needed before collection, which side effects need an urgent call, how long nearby support may be needed, and how treatment may affect fertility, work, medicines, and vaccinations.
