Does atopic dermatitis cause dry skin?

Atopic dermatitis affects the skin barrier, which normally helps retain water and protect against irritants. When that barrier is less effective, skin may feel rough, tight, flaky or cracked. Itch and inflammation can appear alongside the dryness, and soaps, hot water, sweat, weather changes or fragranced products may aggravate symptoms. Dry skin has many causes and does not by itself establish atopic dermatitis, particularly when there is no itch, rash or recurring pattern.

Choose a fragrance-free cream or ointment rather than a light lotion if your skin is very dry. Bathe with lukewarm water, use cleanser only where needed, and pat rather than rub. Apply moisturiser soon after bathing while the skin is damp, then repeat when tightness returns. Wear soft fabrics and avoid products that sting. During a flare, a clinician may add a prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment and explain where and how to use it.

Arrange a review if dryness is widespread, keeps disrupting sleep, cracks bleed, or regular moisturising is not enough. Seek prompt care for painful warmth, pus, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or numerous blisters. Medical advice is also useful when a new product causes burning or a rash, because contact dermatitis or another condition may need different care.
