How athlete's foot causes itching
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of the outer layers of foot skin. Moisture, warmth and limited airflow inside shoes can support fungal growth. The resulting irritation may cause itching, burning, stinging, scaling or small cracks. The skin between the toes can look pale and softened, while the soles may become dry and scaly. Itchy feet can also result from eczema, contact dermatitis or other conditions, so the symptom does not confirm a fungal infection by itself.
What you can do at home
Wash your feet gently and dry carefully, especially between the toes. Change damp socks, let shoes air out, and avoid sharing towels, socks or footwear. An antifungal product from a pharmacy may be appropriate; follow its label directions and continue for the advised course. Avoid applying steroid cream alone to a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician tells you to, because it may mask the appearance while the infection continues.
When to seek medical care
See a clinician if symptoms do not improve with appropriate self-care, spread to the nails, or keep returning. Get prompt advice for marked swelling, warmth, pus, open cracks, severe pain, or fever. People with diabetes, reduced circulation or a weakened immune system should seek medical guidance early when foot skin is broken or infected-looking.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the rash looks fungal, whether a skin sample is useful, and which treatment is suitable for your feet. Ask how long to use it, how to reduce reinfection from shoes, and whether anyone sharing towels or floors needs precautions.

Yes. Scaling, soft skin between the toes or mild cracking can be present even when redness is subtle.
Can I keep exercising with athlete's foot?
Often, but keep feet covered in shared areas, avoid walking barefoot, and wash and dry your feet afterwards.
