Does asteatotic eczema cause dry skin?

Asteatotic eczema is a dry-skin form of eczema in which the skin barrier loses moisture and becomes easier to irritate. The surface may develop fine intersecting cracks that resemble a dried riverbed, with redness, flaking, tightness, or itch. It often affects the lower legs, but other areas can be involved.

Dryness may worsen in cold or low-humidity air, after hot showers, or with fragranced soaps and strong cleansers. Dry skin alone has many causes, so persistent or inflamed symptoms deserve assessment.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser several times a day, especially within a few minutes of bathing. Use lukewarm water, keep showers brief, and choose a gentle cleanser only where needed. Pat rather than rub the skin dry.

Avoid scratching and wool or rough fabrics against irritated areas. If cracks, redness, or itch continue despite regular moisturising, a clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment and check for infection or another skin condition.

Arrange medical review for painful fissures, persistent itch, bleeding, spreading redness, oozing, yellow crusts, warmth, or swelling. Seek urgent care if skin symptoms come with fever, rapidly increasing pain, or feeling significantly unwell.
