Does Asherman Syndrome Cause Periods to Stop?

Asherman Syndrome involves scar tissue inside the uterus, often after a procedure or inflammation affecting the uterine lining. The scar tissue may partly or fully block the space where the lining normally builds and sheds. Bleeding can therefore become much lighter, irregular, or absent. Some people also develop pelvic pain that follows a monthly pattern even when little blood leaves the uterus.

A stopped period is not enough to identify the cause. Pregnancy, hormonal changes, breastfeeding, intense stress, changes in weight, and other medical conditions can also alter the menstrual cycle. A clinician considers your history, symptoms, and examination together.

If your periods have stopped unexpectedly, arrange a medical assessment and mention any previous uterine procedure, pregnancy-related treatment, infection, or pelvic pain. A pregnancy test may be part of the first checks. Your clinician may discuss an examination and imaging, and sometimes a camera examination of the uterus is needed to assess scar tissue.

Keep a record of your last period, any spotting, pain, procedures, medicines, and pregnancy possibility. Do not start hormones or try to reopen the cervix yourself. Treatment decisions depend on the location and extent of scarring and on whether you hope to become pregnant.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Contact a clinician promptly if periods stop after a uterine procedure, or if absent periods come with new headaches, vision changes, or breast discharge.
