Does antiviral treatment treat erythema multiforme?

Erythema multiforme is an immune-mediated skin reaction that can produce round target-like lesions, often on the hands, arms, legs, or face. Herpes simplex is one possible trigger, but infections, medicines, and other factors may also be involved. An antiviral works against a herpes infection; it does not directly switch off every cause of the skin reaction.

A clinician may ask about recent cold sores, genital sores, infections, or new medicines. The appearance of the rash, mouth involvement, and overall health help guide treatment.

Have a new target-like rash assessed, particularly if it is spreading or accompanied by blisters, mouth soreness, or fever. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not stop a suspected medicine without clinical advice. Gentle skin care, adequate fluids, and treatment for discomfort may be recommended while the reaction settles.

Tell the clinician if similar episodes follow cold sores or another infection. That pattern may affect whether antiviral treatment is considered for the current episode or future recurrences.

Seek urgent care for painful mouth or eye sores, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly worsening rash. Eye symptoms require prompt review. Emergency assessment is appropriate if you feel faint, confused, severely unwell, or unable to maintain fluids.

Ask what may have triggered the reaction, whether antiviral treatment is relevant, how to protect the eyes and mouth, which medicines to avoid, and what signs should prompt immediate review.
