Does antifungal treatment for thrush treat nipple thrush?

Nipple thrush can involve burning or shooting nipple pain, itching, shiny or flaky skin, and pain during or after feeds. These symptoms can also come from a shallow latch, damaged skin, dermatitis, blocked ducts, or bacterial infection. A baby with oral thrush may have white patches that do not wipe away easily. Treating only one member of the breastfeeding pair may allow symptoms to continue if both are affected.

Arrange an assessment for you and your baby if nipple pain persists or keeps returning. Use only a product recommended for the nipple and breastfeeding context; do not apply a baby medicine to yourself unless told to do so. Wash hands before and after feeds, keep breast pads clean and dry, and follow the prescribed course. Do not stop breastfeeding without personalised advice, because feeding plans depend on pain, milk supply, and the baby's needs.

Seek prompt advice for fever, a hot red area on the breast, a firm painful lump, pus, or feeling unwell, as these can need different treatment. Contact a clinician if your baby feeds poorly, seems unusually sleepy, or has signs of dehydration. Rapidly worsening breast pain or fever needs urgent assessment.
