Does antifungal treatment for thrush help with vaginal discharge?

Thrush may cause a thick, white discharge, often alongside vulval irritation or itching. Treatment targets the yeast overgrowth, so discharge linked to thrush should settle as the infection improves. Discharge that is thin, grey, green, yellow, strongly unpleasant-smelling, or accompanied by pelvic pain may point to another problem. A change in discharge alone cannot confirm thrush.

Use an antifungal product only as directed on its label or by a clinician. Avoid scented washes and vaginal douching, which can irritate the area. If this is your first episode, the discharge does not match your usual thrush symptoms, or treatment does not improve it, arrange an assessment rather than repeating doses. A clinician may examine you or test a sample to identify the cause.

Seek prompt medical advice for discharge with fever, lower abdominal pain, sores, bleeding unrelated to your period, pain when urinating, or a strong new odour. Get advice during pregnancy before choosing treatment. Urgent care is appropriate if severe pain, faintness, or heavy bleeding occurs.
