Does antibiotic treatment treat whooping cough?

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, can begin like a mild cold and develop into repeated coughing fits, vomiting after coughing, or a high-pitched intake of breath. Antibiotics target the bacteria and are particularly useful early or when protecting people at higher risk of severe illness. They may not quickly remove a cough that has already irritated the airways.

The infection can spread through respiratory droplets. A clinician may advise staying away from school, work, babies, or vulnerable people until you have taken treatment for the advised period. Coughing fits can remain exhausting, so rest, small sips of fluid, and avoiding smoke may help while recovery continues.

Contact a clinician if whooping cough is suspected, particularly after close contact with a known case or if a baby, pregnant person, or person with a long-term condition is exposed. Take prescribed doses exactly as directed and do not share them. Cover coughs, wash hands, improve ventilation, and follow advice about notifying or testing close contacts.

Get emergency help for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe difficulty breathing, collapse, or inability to wake normally. Babies may have breathing pauses without a clear whoop and need urgent assessment. Seek prompt medical advice for dehydration, repeated vomiting, chest pain, or coughing fits that are becoming more severe.
