Does antibiotic treatment treat tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis means inflammation of the tonsils. Viruses are a frequent cause, although bacteria such as the one that causes strep throat can also be responsible. Sore throat, fever, swollen tonsils, white patches, and painful swallowing may occur with either cause. An examination and, sometimes, a throat test help determine whether an antibiotic is suitable.

If a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, the prescribed medicine targets the bacteria. It will not shorten a viral illness. Take any prescription as directed and seek advice about side effects rather than stopping or sharing it.

Drink fluids, rest, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief for your age, health conditions, and other medicines. Arrange an assessment when symptoms are severe, keep returning, or do not start improving. Avoid antibiotics left from a previous illness.

Get urgent help if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, your voice becomes muffled, or one side of the throat becomes much more swollen. These symptoms can signal airway trouble or a collection beside a tonsil and need rapid assessment.
