Does antibiotic treatment treat syphilis?

Syphilis is an infection caused by bacteria and can affect different parts of the body over time. It may begin with a painless sore or a rash, but some people have no obvious symptoms. A blood test and clinical assessment help confirm infection and guide treatment. Antibiotics can stop the infection, but they cannot reliably reverse damage that has already occurred.

Tell the clinician about previous treatment, allergies, pregnancy, and symptoms involving the eyes, ears, or nervous system. After treatment, follow-up testing may be advised to check that the infection is responding. Recent or current sexual partners may also need testing and treatment.

Arrange confidential medical or sexual-health advice if you think you may have been exposed, have a genital sore or unexplained rash, or have a partner diagnosed with syphilis. Avoid sexual contact until a clinician explains when it is safe and partners have received appropriate advice. Do not self-treat with antibiotics bought or saved for another illness.

Seek prompt care for vision changes, eye pain, hearing changes, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or problems with balance. Tell the clinician urgently if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, because untreated syphilis can affect pregnancy and the baby.
