Does antibiotic treatment treat prostatitis?

Prostatitis means inflammation of the prostate. Bacterial forms may cause pelvic or lower-back pain, burning urination, urinary frequency, fever, or pain with ejaculation. Other forms can cause ongoing pelvic discomfort without a bacterial infection, so antibiotics may not help. A clinician may ask about your symptoms, examine you, and arrange urine or other tests before selecting treatment. Medicines for pain, urinary symptoms, or muscle tension may also be considered.

Book a medical assessment for painful urination, pelvic pain, difficulty passing urine, or symptoms that keep returning. Take an antibiotic only when prescribed, and use it for the schedule given even if symptoms settle sooner. Drink normally unless you have been told to restrict fluids, and mention kidney problems, medicine allergies, or recent antibiotic use. Do not use someone else's treatment, because the cause and medicine choice may differ.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop a high fever with shaking chills, become confused or very weak, or have severe worsening pain. Acute bacterial prostatitis can become serious and may need prompt treatment, tests, or hospital support rather than tablets taken without supervision.
