Does antibiotic treatment treat diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can affect the throat, nose, skin, or other areas. A thick coating in the throat, sore throat, hoarse voice, swollen neck, fever, or difficulty swallowing can occur. The bacteria can release a toxin that damages tissues, so antibiotics address the bacteria but may not reverse toxin-related injury already present.

Medical teams may give an antitoxin when it is indicated, monitor breathing and the heart, and use infection-control measures to protect other people. Testing can support the diagnosis, but treatment decisions may need to start before every result is available.

Seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for symptoms to settle or trying leftover antibiotics. Tell the service about vaccination history, recent travel, close contacts, and any throat coating or breathing difficulty. Do not attempt to scrape a membrane from the throat.

Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Keep away from close contact until the medical team confirms that precautions can end, and follow advice about testing or preventive treatment for household and other close contacts. Vaccination status should also be reviewed after the immediate problem is managed.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, bluish lips, fainting, severe weakness, or chest symptoms. A suspected case with a throat membrane, significant swelling, or worsening swallowing needs immediate assessment even if the person can still speak.

Ask whether antitoxin is needed, how long infection-control precautions should continue, which close contacts require assessment, and how vaccination will be updated. Ask what warning signs should prompt an immediate return after discharge.
