Does antibiotic treatment treat amoebiasis?

Amoebiasis is caused by a parasite that can affect the intestine. It may cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps or blood in the stool, although symptoms vary and other infections can look similar. Diagnosis may require a stool assessment, especially after travel or exposure to unsafe food or water. The treatment plan depends on whether the parasite is present and whether it is limited to the intestine or has affected another site. Medicines that work against bacteria are not automatically the right treatment for a parasite.

Arrange medical assessment rather than self-treating with leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines. Drink frequent fluids and consider an oral rehydration solution if diarrhoea is causing fluid loss. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Tell the clinician about recent travel, untreated water, persistent diarrhoea, blood in stool, pregnancy and medicines you take. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend any recommended follow-up.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or blood in the stool with worsening illness. Prompt assessment is also needed for persistent diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, or symptoms after travel in a person who is pregnant, very young, older, or immunocompromised. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe if you cannot maintain fluids.

Ask which test can confirm the cause, whether you need targeted antiparasitic treatment, how to replace lost fluids, and how to reduce spread at home. Ask when ongoing diarrhoea or blood in stool should be reassessed.
