Does antibiotic treatment help with sore throat?

Viruses are a common cause of sore throat, especially when cough, runny nose or hoarseness are also present. Bacterial throat infections can have different features, and a clinician may examine your throat and decide whether a swab or other test is useful. Antibiotics do not shorten a viral illness and can still cause unwanted effects. The colour of mucus or the intensity of pain alone does not establish that bacteria are responsible.

Sip fluids, choose soft foods and rest your voice. Warm drinks, cool liquids or lozenges may soothe the throat; avoid anything that irritates it. Gargling with warm salt water can help some adults and older children who can gargle safely. Use paracetamol or another suitable pain reliever according to its directions, checking first if you have a medical condition or take regular medicines. Do not take leftover antibiotics. If a clinician prescribes one, use it exactly as directed.

Get emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or sound unusually muffled. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, dehydration, a spreading rash, persistent high fever, or marked illness. Arrange a review when symptoms are worsening, fail to start improving, or repeatedly return, especially if you have reduced immunity.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a viral or bacterial infection, whether testing is needed, and what pain relief is safe for you. If antibiotics are prescribed, ask how to take them and what reaction should trigger urgent advice.
