Does antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection treat trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite rather than the bacteria that cause many pelvic infections. It can cause unusual or frothy discharge, genital irritation, burning during urination or discomfort during sex, although some people have no symptoms. A medicine used for another pelvic infection may not clear it. Testing helps identify the infection and guides the prescription.

Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and avoid sexual contact until treatment is complete and your clinician advises that it is safe. Current or recent partners may need evaluation and treatment, even if they have no symptoms. Avoid alcohol if your prescription label or clinician warns against it, and return for review if discharge, irritation or burning continues.

Arrange prompt medical care for pelvic pain, fever, pregnancy, worsening symptoms or pain during sex. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, confusion or feeling suddenly very unwell, because another or more serious infection may be present.

Ask which test confirmed the infection, whether your partner needs treatment, when sex can safely resume, and whether repeat testing or a follow-up visit is recommended.
