Does antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection treat toxic shock syndrome?

Toxic shock syndrome is a severe illness caused by toxins released by certain bacteria. It can develop from an infection in different parts of the body, including a wound or the vagina, and may affect the whole body quickly. Care usually involves finding and controlling the source, antibiotics selected for the suspected infection, intravenous fluids and close monitoring. Pelvic infection treatment is not a substitute for that assessment.

If toxic shock syndrome is suspected, call emergency services or go to an emergency department. Tell staff about recent childbirth, surgery, a wound, vaginal products, medicines and any infection treatment already taken. Do not wait to see whether a pelvic antibiotic starts working, and do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or severely weak.

Seek emergency help for sudden high fever, faintness, confusion, severe muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhoea, a widespread rash, breathing difficulty, very little urine or rapidly worsening weakness. These symptoms need immediate assessment, regardless of whether pelvic pain is present.

After urgent care, ask what source was found, which treatment was given, what follow-up is needed, and which symptoms should trigger another emergency review.
