Does antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection treat pelvic inflammatory disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease can involve the womb, fallopian tubes, ovaries or nearby pelvic tissues. Because more than one type of bacteria may be involved, treatment often uses medicines that work against several groups rather than waiting for one test result. Antibiotics can control the active infection, but they cannot always reverse tissue damage that happened before treatment began. Early review helps reduce the chance of ongoing problems.

Take every dose as prescribed and attend the planned review, even if pelvic pain or discharge settles. Avoid sexual contact until your clinician says it is safe, and ask whether partners need assessment or treatment. Seek advice before taking anti-inflammatory medicines if you have another medical condition or are pregnant. Do not share antibiotics or use a shortened course.

Seek urgent care for severe pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever with vomiting, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Hospital treatment may be needed when tablets cannot be tolerated, pregnancy is possible, an abscess is suspected or the illness is severe.
