Does antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection help with vaginal discharge?

Pelvic infections can cause a change in the amount, colour, smell, or consistency of vaginal discharge because inflamed reproductive tissues and infection alter normal secretions. When bacteria are responsible and the selected antibiotic reaches them, the discharge can lessen as the infection settles. This change may take time rather than happening immediately.

Discharge can also be linked to normal cycle changes, thrush, bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, irritation, or a retained object. Antibiotics chosen for a pelvic infection may not cover these causes, so a test-based diagnosis matters. Do not use vaginal washes or insert products to mask the change before assessment.

Arrange an examination if discharge is new, persistent, unusual for you, or accompanied by pelvic pain, bleeding, fever, pain during sex, or burning when you pass urine. Describe its colour, texture, smell, and when it started. If antibiotics are prescribed, complete them as directed and follow advice about sex and partner testing. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care if discharge occurs with severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding, or possible pregnancy. Prompt review is also needed if symptoms worsen during treatment or do not begin to settle as expected.

Ask what may be causing the discharge, whether swabs or urine tests are needed, when improvement should be expected, and whether a partner requires assessment.
