Does antibiotics for skin infection treat erysipelas?

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection affecting the upper skin and nearby lymphatic vessels. It often produces a sharply bordered area of redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness, sometimes with fever or chills. Antibiotics target the bacteria; creams alone are not usually enough for a deeper infection. A clinician may prescribe treatment by mouth when the illness is suitable for outpatient care, while a more unwell person may need medicine through a vein and observation. The affected limb may remain swollen or discoloured for a while after the infection starts improving.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment rather than using leftover antibiotics or sharing someone else’s prescription. Tell the clinician when the redness began, how quickly it has spread, whether you have fever, and whether you have diabetes, swelling, an open wound or a weakened immune system. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes it. Rest the affected area and, if practical, keep a swollen limb raised. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice spread, but it does not replace review.

Seek urgent medical help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe, the skin becomes dusky or blistered, or you feel faint, confused or markedly unwell. Go promptly if fever or chills accompany the skin changes, or if the infection is near the eye. Worsening symptoms after starting treatment, repeated vomiting that prevents taking medicine, or new red streaks also need same-day advice.

Ask which antibiotic is appropriate, how soon improvement should begin, whether you need a review, and what may have allowed bacteria to enter the skin. Ask how to care for a wound, swelling or athlete’s foot if one is present, and which changes should prompt urgent reassessment.
