Do antibiotics for a skin infection help with spreading redness?

Bacterial infection can inflame the skin and nearby tissues, causing redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling that extends outward. Antibiotics work against certain bacteria, so they may stop the infection from progressing and allow the inflammation to settle. Redness can also have non-bacterial causes, and an antibiotic will not treat those. A clinician may examine the border, check for drainage or a wound, and ask about fever, pain, allergies, and recent medicines.

Arrange prompt medical assessment rather than waiting for the red area to continue expanding. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s prescription. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or picking it, and mark the edge lightly to help you notice change. Improvement may take time; worsening redness or new symptoms should be reported.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, chills, marked swelling, red streaks, confusion, faintness, or feeling very unwell.
