Does anti-inflammatory medication treat knee bursitis?

Bursae are small fluid-filled cushions that reduce rubbing around the knee. Repeated kneeling, a knock, pressure, or infection can inflame one. Medication may make movement more comfortable, but continued pressure can keep symptoms going. If infection is possible, anti-inflammatory medicine alone is not the right treatment.

Reduce kneeling and other activities that press on the sore area, and use a cushion or protection when those tasks cannot be avoided. Ask a clinician whether ice, activity changes, physiotherapy, or medicine suits you. Do not self-treat a red, hot, rapidly swollen knee, particularly if you feel unwell. Mention ulcers, kidney disease, blood thinners, and pregnancy before taking medicine.

Seek prompt medical care if the knee becomes hot and red, swelling increases quickly, you develop fever, or pain makes weight-bearing difficult. Arrange a review when symptoms persist despite reducing pressure, return repeatedly, or restrict bending and walking. Urgent assessment is sensible after a significant injury or sudden inability to move the knee.

Ask what may have irritated the bursa, whether infection or gout needs consideration, and which medicine is appropriate for you. Ask how long to modify kneeling, whether physiotherapy would help, and when swelling needs further assessment.
