Does anti-inflammatory medication treat ankylosing spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis involves inflammation that often affects the spine and the joints linking the spine with the pelvis. Anti-inflammatory medication may reduce this inflammation and make daily movement more comfortable. It manages symptoms and inflammatory activity; it does not reverse established changes in the spine or replace assessment of how the condition is behaving.

Care is individual. A rheumatology clinician may review pain, stiffness, mobility, other affected joints, and symptoms outside the musculoskeletal system. The choice of medicine depends on your health history, other treatments, and how you respond.

Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and report troublesome effects rather than changing it independently. Regular mobility work, posture practice, breathing exercises, and strengthening can support function; a physiotherapist can tailor these to your symptoms. Keep appointments so response, movement, and safety can be reviewed. Tell the care team about eye pain or redness, bowel symptoms, skin changes, or new heel pain.

Contact your clinician if pain or stiffness is worsening, medication no longer gives useful relief, or side effects appear. Seek urgent help for a painful red eye with light sensitivity, new neurological weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe chest symptoms, or a hot joint with fever. These problems may need separate assessment.

Ask what improvement to look for, how long the current plan should be reviewed, and which monitoring checks you need. Discuss exercise limits, medicine interactions, and what alternatives exist if relief is incomplete or side effects are difficult.
