Does antenatal steroid injection treat premature rupture of membranes?

Premature rupture of membranes means the amniotic sac breaks before labour begins. The injection addresses a different issue: corticosteroids can help fetal lung development when clinicians think birth may happen early. It does not stop fluid from leaking, close the opening, or remove the risk of infection. Your team may also assess your temperature, pulse, abdominal tenderness, vaginal fluid, contractions, fetal heart rate, and other signs to decide whether observation, antibiotics, or birth is safer.

If you think your waters have broken, use a clean pad, note the colour and smell of the fluid, and contact your maternity unit promptly. Do not put anything into the vagina or have sex until you have been assessed. Follow instructions about monitoring, medicines, activity, and returning to hospital. Tell staff about fever, bleeding, pain, contractions, or changes in fetal movement.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for fever or chills, foul-smelling or green fluid, vaginal bleeding, increasing abdominal pain, regular contractions, or reduced baby movements. Emergency help is needed for severe illness, collapse, or heavy bleeding. Infection can develop after the membranes rupture, so do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms change.

Ask what the injection is intended to do, whether you need other medicines, how infection will be monitored, and what findings would change the birth plan.
