Does antenatal care package treat gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose first recognised during pregnancy. Antenatal care may include screening, reviewing glucose readings, checking blood pressure and discussing how pregnancy is progressing. These visits help the team notice when extra support is needed, but a routine package is not a substitute for diabetes-specific management.

A diabetes or maternity clinician may recommend changes to meals, activity that is safe for your pregnancy, home glucose checks or medicine. The plan can change as pregnancy develops. Keeping appointments and bringing your glucose record helps the team make decisions using your actual pattern rather than a single reading.

Attend the follow-up arranged by your maternity or diabetes team and ask how to check and record glucose. Take medicines exactly as prescribed, eat regular balanced meals and follow the activity advice given for your pregnancy. Do not make major dietary changes, skip meals or stop treatment without discussing it with the team.

Tell your clinicians about vomiting, difficulty keeping food down, or repeated readings outside the range they gave you. They can review the plan and explain how monitoring continues after birth.

Contact your maternity or diabetes team promptly if readings repeatedly fall outside your agreed range, you cannot keep fluids down, or you feel unusually unwell. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, heavy breathing or reduced fetal movement according to the maternity instructions you were given. Use emergency services for severe symptoms.
