Does anomaly scan treat neural tube defects?

Anomaly scanning uses ultrasound to examine the baby's structure, including the brain and spine. Some neural tube defects, such as spina bifida or anencephaly, may be visible during this assessment. The scan is an examination, not a procedure that repairs a structural difference. An image can raise a concern, but the sonographer or specialist may need further imaging, review, or testing before explaining what the finding means.

If the scan suggests a possible neural tube defect, ask your maternity team when you will see a fetal medicine specialist and what additional assessment is recommended. Write down the finding in plain language and bring a support person if helpful. A specialist can discuss the baby's development, available care during pregnancy, delivery planning, and support after birth. Avoid drawing conclusions from a preliminary scan report alone.

A scan finding usually needs planned specialist follow-up rather than emergency treatment. Contact your maternity unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, severe abdominal pain, fever, or feeling very unwell during pregnancy. Keep scheduled appointments even if you feel well, because some findings do not cause symptoms in the pregnant person.

Ask what was seen, how certain the finding is, which part of the spine or brain is involved, whether another scan is needed, and what support and care options are available.
