Short answer

Reduced Range of Motion is a common presentation of Ankylosing Spondylitis, particularly around the spine, hips, and rib joints.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Spinal, hip, pelvic, and rib joints.

Frequent comfortable movement and guided exercises.

How the condition affects movement

Inflammation in ankylosing spondylitis can make spinal and pelvic joints painful and stiff. Guarding against discomfort may make turning, bending, or standing upright harder. Over time, ongoing inflammation can change the tissues around the spine and reduce flexibility. Some people also notice difficulty taking a deep breath if the joints connecting the ribs are involved.

Reduced movement can have other explanations, such as an injury, osteoarthritis, muscle tightness, or a nerve problem. The symptom does not establish a diagnosis by itself. A clinician compares both sides where relevant, checks strength and sensation, and asks how movement changes with rest or activity.

Protect useful movement

Use comfortable daily movement rather than staying in one position for long periods. A physiotherapist can show spinal, hip, chest-expansion, and posture exercises matched to your ability. Move gradually, keep breathing normally, and do not push through sharp or escalating pain. Note tasks that have become difficult, such as looking over a shoulder or reaching overhead, so your appointment focuses on practical changes.

When assessment is needed

Book an assessment if movement is progressively restricted, stiffness repeatedly follows rest, or pain interrupts sleep. Get urgent help for sudden weakness, new bladder or bowel changes, numbness in the saddle area, or severe pain after an injury. Prompt review is also appropriate for breathing difficulty or a hot swollen joint with fever.

Questions to bring

Ask which joints appear restricted, whether imaging or blood tests could clarify the cause, and which movements should be prioritised. Discuss how to adapt work, driving, or sleep positions while treatment is being planned.

Questions people ask

Can reduced movement improve?

It may improve when inflammation and pain are managed and movement is practised safely, although the response varies between people.

Is reduced range of motion enough to diagnose the condition?

No. A diagnosis uses the symptom history, examination, and sometimes investigations; several conditions can restrict movement.
