Does ankle fracture cause inability to bear weight?
Short answer
Inability to Bear Weight is a very common presentation of Ankle Fracture.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common presentation
- An ankle fracture can make standing or walking impossible because of pain, swelling, and instability.
- Until assessed
- Avoid putting weight on the injured ankle and do not attempt to straighten it.
The short answer
Inability to Bear Weight is a very common presentation of Ankle Fracture. A break can cause pain, swelling, tenderness, and loss of stability around the ankle, making it unsafe or too painful to stand or walk. The symptom can also occur with a severe sprain or another injury, so an examination and imaging may be needed to identify the cause.
What inability to bear weight can mean
After an injury, inability to put weight through the foot may reflect swelling inside or around the ankle, a broken bone, or damage to supporting ligaments. Bruising, a visibly unusual shape, marked tenderness over a bone, or pain that increases when the ankle moves can add to the concern for a fracture. Do not test the ankle by repeatedly walking on it; doing so may worsen pain or displacement.
What to do now
Keep weight off the injured side until a clinician has assessed it. Rest the ankle, raise it when possible, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods to help with swelling. Avoid trying to straighten the ankle or push a visible deformity back into place. If you have a removable shoe or jewellery around the ankle, take it off early if this is comfortable, because swelling can increase. Arrange prompt medical assessment, especially when walking is not possible.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care after an ankle injury if the foot is cold, pale, blue, numb, or increasingly difficult to move; if the ankle looks deformed; or if severe swelling or pain is rapidly worsening. An open wound near the injury also needs urgent attention. Even without these warning signs, inability to bear weight after trauma warrants timely assessment because a fracture cannot be confirmed or excluded by symptoms alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether an X-ray or another scan is needed, whether you should keep all weight off the ankle, and whether a boot, cast, or crutches are appropriate. You can also ask how to control swelling, which movements are safe, and what changes should prompt a return visit.

Questions people ask
Can I walk on an ankle fracture?
Walking may worsen pain or disturb the injury, so keep weight off the ankle until a clinician gives specific advice.
Does being unable to walk prove that the ankle is fractured?
No. Severe sprains and other injuries can also prevent weight-bearing; examination and imaging may be needed.
