Does anaemia in pregnancy cause constipation in pregnancy?

Short answer
Constipation in Pregnancy is a common presentation of Anaemia in Pregnancy, but it can also have several other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why this may happen
Anaemia can occur when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen. In pregnancy, constipation may occur alongside anaemia, but it is also common because pregnancy hormones can slow bowel movement. Iron tablets prescribed for anaemia may make stools harder or less frequent. Diet, reduced activity, dehydration, and pressure from the growing womb can add to the problem. Constipation alone cannot identify the cause.
Ways to get relief
Tell your maternity clinician about constipation and any iron medicine you take. Drink fluids regularly unless you were told to restrict them, add fibre gradually through fruit, vegetables, beans, and whole grains, and keep gently active if your pregnancy team says this is suitable. Do not stop iron without advice; a clinician may change the preparation or recommend a pregnancy-safe laxative.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team if constipation persists, keeps returning, or follows a change in iron treatment. Seek prompt help for severe or increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, or inability to pass stool and gas. Dizziness, breathlessness at rest, chest discomfort, or fainting also need urgent assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your blood tests confirm anaemia, whether your iron treatment could be contributing, how much fibre and fluid is appropriate, and which bowel medicine is safe during pregnancy.
