Does anaemia cause cold hands and feet?

Anaemia means the blood cannot carry oxygen as effectively as it should, depending on its type and cause. Reduced oxygen delivery can contribute to tiredness and a feeling that the hands or feet are unusually cold. Anaemia may also occur with pale skin, breathlessness during activity, dizziness, headaches, or a faster heartbeat. Cold hands and feet can instead relate to cold surroundings, reduced circulation, thyroid problems, nerve symptoms, or some medicines, so the symptom does not establish a diagnosis.

Book a medical appointment if cold hands and feet are persistent, new, or accompanied by fatigue, breathlessness, heavy menstrual bleeding, dietary restriction, or dizziness. A clinician may ask about bleeding, diet, chronic illness, and medicines, then arrange a blood count and other tests to look for the type and cause of anaemia. Keep your extremities comfortably warm, avoid smoking, and do not begin iron supplements without advice because excess iron can be harmful and not all anaemia is caused by iron deficiency.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, new confusion, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or hands or feet that become suddenly pale, blue, numb, or intensely painful. These features may signal a circulation or oxygen problem requiring prompt assessment.
