Does amniocentesis treat Down syndrome?

During amniocentesis, a clinician uses ultrasound guidance while taking a small sample of fluid around the baby. The fluid contains cells and genetic material that can be analysed for chromosome changes, including the extra chromosome associated with Down syndrome. The procedure is diagnostic, not curative. A screening result may lead to an offer of diagnostic testing, but screening and diagnosis are different types of information.

Discuss why testing has been offered, what the laboratory will examine, when results are expected, and what choices may follow. Your maternity team can explain the procedure, alternatives, and possible risks in your circumstances. Genetic counselling can help you understand the result and consider support for you and your family. You do not need to make decisions from a screening result alone.

Contact your maternity unit promptly after the procedure if you develop vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, worsening abdominal pain, or feel acutely unwell. Before testing, seek advice for any concern about the pregnancy, especially pain or bleeding.

Ask whether the proposed test is screening or diagnostic, what condition the sample can assess, how results will be communicated, and where you can access counselling and practical support.
