Does allergy medication help with itchy throat?

Histamine can make the throat feel tickly or itchy during an allergy flare. Nasal mucus draining backwards can also irritate the throat, especially when the nose is blocked and you breathe through your mouth. Antihistamines may reduce histamine symptoms, while treating nasal inflammation can reduce the drip. A dry room, viral illness, reflux or irritation from smoke can cause similar sensations.

Avoid the suspected trigger, sip water and consider a warm drink if it feels soothing. Do not scratch the throat with hard foods or use someone else’s medicine. Follow the label and do not combine products that contain the same active ingredient.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden throat, tongue or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness, widespread hives or trouble swallowing after food, medicine or an insect sting. Seek medical advice for a persistent sore throat, fever, worsening pain, or symptoms that do not improve when the suspected trigger is avoided.
