Does allergy medication help with itchy eyes?

Allergens such as pollen, dust or animal dander can trigger release of histamine in the eye surface. This may cause itching, watering, redness and a gritty feeling, often in both eyes. Oral antihistamines may help several allergy symptoms, while antihistamine or mast-cell stabilising eye drops act directly at the eye. Dryness, infection, contact-lens irritation and inflammation can look similar but need different care.

Avoid rubbing, since rubbing can further irritate the eye surface. Wash your hands, use a cool clean compress and rinse away visible irritants with clean water or suitable saline. Remove contact lenses while the eyes are irritated unless an eye professional tells you otherwise. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, a change in vision, injury, chemical exposure, pus-like discharge, or swelling that affects opening the eye.
