Does adrenal cancer cause persistent abdominal pain?

An adrenal tumour may create discomfort by growing near the kidney and other structures at the back of the upper abdomen. Some tumours also produce hormones, which can cause additional changes elsewhere in the body. Pain by itself cannot identify the cause.

Discomfort linked with an adrenal mass may be felt in the abdomen, side, or back and may occur with a sense of fullness or an abdominal lump. Hormone-producing tumours can cause changes such as difficult-to-control blood pressure, muscle weakness, altered body shape, new excess hair growth, or changes in sexual function.

Digestive, urinary, muscular, and gynaecological conditions can also cause persistent abdominal pain. Its location, pattern, triggers, accompanying symptoms, and effect on eating or movement help a clinician decide which examinations and tests are appropriate.

Book a medical appointment when abdominal pain persists, recurs, or is getting worse. Record where it is felt, whether it spreads to the back or side, what makes it better or worse, and any changes in appetite, weight, bowel habits, urination, blood pressure, or menstrual pattern.

The clinician may examine the abdomen and review medicines and medical history. Depending on the findings, assessment can involve blood or urine tests, including hormone checks, and imaging. Do not stop prescribed steroid medicines suddenly, because abrupt withdrawal can be dangerous.
