Does acute lymphoblastic leukaemia cause unexplained fever?

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia affects developing white blood cells in the bone marrow. The disease can disrupt normal blood-cell production and immune function, while infection can develop when healthy infection-fighting cells are reduced or do not work properly. Either the illness or an infection may be associated with fever.

Fever by itself cannot identify acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Viral and bacterial infections, inflammatory conditions, medicines, and other illnesses can also raise body temperature. Clinicians interpret the fever alongside symptoms, examination findings, and blood tests rather than relying on temperature alone.

Measure and record the temperature with the time, and note chills, sweating, tiredness, bruising, bleeding, pallor, bone pain, swollen glands, breathlessness, or repeated infections. Arrange medical assessment when fever has no clear cause, keeps returning, or occurs with other concerning changes.

Tell the clinician about current medicines, recent infections, travel, immune conditions, and any cancer treatment. Testing may include a full blood count and examination of a blood film; further assessment depends on those findings. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics because they may be inappropriate and can complicate evaluation.

Seek urgent medical care if fever occurs with difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, a seizure, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, uncontrolled bleeding, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. These warning signs require assessment regardless of the suspected cause.

Anyone receiving chemotherapy or known to have reduced infection-fighting blood cells should follow their cancer team's emergency fever instructions immediately, even if they otherwise feel fairly well. Do not wait for a routine appointment or mask the temperature with medicine before contacting the team unless their plan specifically says to do so.

Ask which symptoms or examination findings need investigation, what the blood count shows, and whether infection testing is required. If any result is abnormal, clarify what further tests are proposed, how quickly they should happen, which new symptoms require emergency care, and how you will receive the results.
