Does actinic keratosis cause a skin sore that does not heal?

Actinic keratosis develops in sun-damaged skin and may feel rough, scaly, crusted, or tender. A patch can repeatedly catch, bleed, form a scab, or seem not to heal fully. These changes are often noticed on areas exposed to sunlight, such as the face, scalp, ears, forearms, or backs of the hands.

Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Irritation, infection, inflammatory skin disease, and skin cancer can also produce a persistent sore. A clinician may inspect the site with magnification and decide whether examination of a tissue sample is needed.

Arrange a clinical skin assessment if a sore does not close, repeatedly scabs, or returns in the same place. Avoid picking or scraping it, since repeated injury can obscure how it is changing. Protect the area from further sun exposure with shade, clothing, and a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Take a clear photograph with the date and note changes in size, colour, texture, bleeding, discomfort, and discharge. Tell the clinician about immune-suppressing medicines, previous skin cancers, extensive sun exposure, and treatments already applied. Do not use leftover prescription creams unless they are specifically advised for this lesion.

Seek prompt medical review if the area grows quickly, becomes a firm lump, develops a deep ulcer, bleeds without being knocked, or becomes increasingly painful. Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever may indicate infection and also warrants timely care.

Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure or for rapidly spreading redness accompanied by marked illness, confusion, or faintness. Urgency comes from these active warning signs, not from assuming that a persistent sore has one particular diagnosis.

Ask what features are visible on examination, whether the sore could be infected, and whether a biopsy is recommended. If actinic keratosis is diagnosed, discuss suitable treatment, expected skin reactions, wound care, how to monitor the spot afterward, and whether the rest of your sun-exposed skin should be checked.
