Does acid reflux medication treat gastritis?

Acid reflux medication can reduce stomach acid and ease some gastritis symptoms, but it does not treat every cause of gastritis. Medicines such as proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers may help when acid is irritating the stomach lining, although the right choice depends on your symptoms, health history and other medicines.

Gastritis means inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining. Acid suppression can give the lining time to settle, but gastritis may also be linked with an H. pylori infection, regular use of anti-inflammatory pain medicines, alcohol irritation, bile reflux or another medical condition. Those causes may need a different approach, such as testing, changing a medicine under clinical guidance or treating an infection.

Heartburn and gastritis can overlap, so improvement with an acid-reducing medicine does not by itself confirm the cause. Persistent upper-abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or early fullness deserves an assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Use an acid reflux medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician. Tell a pharmacist or doctor about pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, long-term medicines and recurring symptoms before starting or extending treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine that may be irritating your stomach without discussing an alternative.

Until you are assessed, smaller meals, avoiding alcohol and stopping smoking may reduce irritation for some people. Keep a note of pain, vomiting, stool changes, triggers and every medicine or supplement you take; this can help identify the cause.

Arrange medical care if symptoms keep returning, do not settle with appropriate short-term treatment, or make eating difficult. A clinician may review medicines, assess for H. pylori and decide whether further tests are needed.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, trouble swallowing or repeated vomiting. Chest pressure or pain with breathlessness, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw also needs emergency assessment because it may not be a stomach problem.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gastritis, reflux or another condition; whether H. pylori testing is appropriate; how long to use the medicine; and which pain relievers, foods or supplements could be aggravating your stomach.
