Does acid reflux cause hoarse voice?

Reflux can reach the upper throat, particularly when symptoms occur at night or when lying down. Irritation around the vocal cords may cause a rough, weak, or strained voice, throat clearing, cough, or a lump sensation. Hoarseness also commonly follows a viral illness, voice overuse, allergies, smoking, or other throat and vocal-cord problems. A voice change alone cannot confirm reflux.

Drink water regularly, rest your voice, and avoid shouting or whispering for long periods. Do not smoke, and limit irritants that you notice worsen symptoms. Eat earlier in the evening and remain upright after meals if night-time reflux is a pattern. Avoid repeated forceful throat clearing; a sip of water or gentle swallow may be kinder to the vocal cords. Seek advice before starting reflux medicine.

Arrange a medical review if hoarseness persists, repeatedly returns, or affects speaking or swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing throat swelling, inability to swallow saliva, coughing blood, or severe chest pain. A clinician may examine your throat and voice box when the change does not settle.

Ask whether reflux, infection, allergies, voice strain, or another cause best fits the timing. Tell them about throat clearing, cough, smoking, recent illness, and whether the voice is worse after sleep or meals. Ask when an ear, nose, and throat assessment would be useful.
