Does acid reflux cause abdominal pain?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. Irritation may cause burning or aching high in the abdomen, sometimes behind the breastbone. Symptoms can appear after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down. Bloating, a sour taste, belching, or food coming back up may occur alongside the discomfort. Abdominal pain has many possible causes, so its location, timing, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician assess it.

Note which foods, drinks, activities, and positions bring on symptoms. Smaller meals, eating slowly, and staying upright after eating may reduce reflux episodes. Avoid lying down soon after a meal and consider raising the head of the bed if night symptoms are frequent. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or other reflux medicine is suitable, particularly if you take regular medicines or have another health condition.

Arrange medical advice if pain keeps returning, interferes with eating or sleep, or does not settle with sensible measures. Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black stools, fainting, or a rigid or very tender abdomen. New chest discomfort, breathlessness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw also needs urgent assessment because it may not be reflux.

Ask whether the pain pattern fits reflux, whether another digestive condition should be considered, and how long to try a treatment. Tell the clinician when symptoms start, where you feel them, what makes them better or worse, and whether swallowing difficulty, weight change, vomiting, or bowel changes are present.
