Does abscess drainage treat paronychia?

Paronychia is inflammation or infection of the skin beside a fingernail or toenail. A tender, swollen area may develop a pocket of pus. If that pocket is present, a clinician may release it so pressure and infected material can leave. Drainage does not replace an examination: the collection may be too small to open, may sit under the nail, or may need a different approach.
