Does abscess drainage treat skin cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin, a thick skin protein. If it becomes inflamed or infected, it can swell, hurt, redden and sometimes drain. Opening it may release the contents and ease pressure, but the sac wall can remain beneath the skin. That means the lump may return or need a different procedure once inflammation has settled.

Not every tender cyst contains an abscess, and redness can also reflect inflammation without infection. A clinician decides whether observation, drainage, medicine, removal or review is appropriate after examining the area.

Do not squeeze, needle or cut a cyst. Keep it covered if it leaks, wash your hands after touching the dressing, and avoid friction from tight clothing or shaving. Follow instructions for cleaning and dressing after drainage. Tell the clinician about previous cysts, allergies and medicines that affect healing.

Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly enlarging, very painful or hot lump, spreading redness, foul drainage, fever or chills. Get urgent help for swelling near the eye, severe illness or rapidly worsening pain. A cyst that repeatedly returns, bleeds or changes should be examined even if it is not painful.

Ask whether the lump is an epidermoid cyst, an abscess or another lesion; whether drainage is suitable; whether the lining remains; and when any definitive treatment should be considered. Ask how to care for the opening and when to return.
