Does abscess drainage treat boils?

A boil is a painful, localized infection around a hair follicle that may develop a pocket of pus. Drainage creates a controlled opening so the material can leave, which may reduce pressure and tenderness. The procedure does not mean every lump should be opened, and a small early boil may be managed differently.

The clinician examines the area and considers its size, depth, location and surrounding redness. They may clean the skin, numb the area, release the contents and cover the wound. A sample, medicine or follow-up may be considered when the appearance or your health history raises concern.

Do not squeeze, pierce or cut a boil at home; this can push infection into nearby tissue. Keep the area clean, avoid sharing towels or razors, and cover any drainage with a clean dressing. Follow wound-care instructions after a procedure and complete prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Tell the clinician if you have diabetes, reduced immunity or repeated boils.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading, pain is worsening, the boil is near the eye, nose or spine, or you develop fever, chills, weakness or red streaks. A boil that returns, involves several connected openings, or does not improve also needs assessment. Urgent review is appropriate when you feel seriously unwell.
